Melanie StewartQuality Engineer/dRWC
Mel Stewart is one of our Quality Engineers at Universal Wolf. Here, she talks a little about her background and how she came to be part of the Wolf Pack.
So, tell us a bit about yourself, Mel – what were you doing before you joined Universal Wolf?
Before I joined Universal Wolf, I worked predominantly in the oil and gas industry. I worked for various companies over the years as a Welder/Fabricator. My first insight into a Quality role was actually working for a company called Direct Message – later acquired by Tharsus!
After Direct Message, I went on to become an Inspector/Expeditor for American Air Filters. After returning from a 2.5 year stint in Mexico, I moved into a Quality Engineer position at Techflow Marine, before accepting my current role at Universal Wolf. I was delighted to join the business as it brought together all of my previous expertise; combining welding and fabrication with the role of Quality Engineer.
It sounds like you’ve had quite the journey! Thinking about your role as Quality Engineer, what is it that gets you out of bed in the morning?
I love being involved in manufacturing again, being able to examine problems and have an input into the solutions. I enjoy the collaboration with my colleagues on the shop floor and in office alike. I can see Universal Wolf going from strength to strength, and this excites me.
Looking back on your career, what has been your proudest moment, and what did you learn from it?
I have a proactive approach to my work and I’ve had some great feedback on this from senior staff and customers alike. I try to bring this to all I do, but my proudest moment was the feedback we received from a recent audit which recommended Universal Wolf to pursue ISO3834-2 and EN15085 certification. It was a new path for me and with the support of a great team, we achieved our goal.
What is your main goal in your current role?
I’d love to have things in place to allow us to explore new avenues in welding and fabrication, and be part of a team that makes Universal Wolf world leaders in complex metal fabrication.
On a personal level, my main goal is to obtain Welding Engineer status.
